What is the difference between a primary and a secondary server? Print

In daily operations, both servers play an active role and equally respond to client queries. If one server becomes unavailable for any reason, the other remains operational to ensure that the domains it manages continue to function.

For this reason, it is recommended that a pair of DNS servers are not located on the same machine, network, or domain to prevent a single failure from affecting both servers simultaneously. The information stored on the primary and secondary DNS servers is always identical, so no matter which server you query, you will receive the same response.
